Ondjiva – Around 1.8 million square meters were demined in 2024, in different municipalities in the province of Cunene, that is 77,128 more compared to 2023, the local representative of the National Mine Action Agency, Mário Satypamba, informed Tuesday, in Ondjiva.
Speaking to ANGOP, he stressed that the process covers agricultural areas, access roads and other social and economic projects, in the municipalities of Cuanhama, Namacunde, Ombadja, Cahama and Cuvelai.
The official said that the work carried out by the National Demining Center, the Border Guard Police Brigade and the Angolan Armed Forces (FAA), allowed the collection of 15 anti-tank mines, 20 anti-personnel mines, 127 explosive devices, 5,899 pieces of ammunition and 31,266 metals.
On the other hand, he made it known that in the province of Cunene, 35 areas suspected of mines are selected, with greater concern in the commune of Môngua, corresponding to an area of over 4.5 million square meters to be cleared.
He clarified that due to insufficient financial and logistical resources, operators have limited intervention in suspicious areas.
Mário Satypamba informed that currently, the demining process in the region is made in a targeted manner, where teams are called to intervene in the event of the discovery of ordnances or when carrying out a project.
During the period under review, 6,469 people were made aware of the risk of mines, among these 5,895 children and 574 adults.
