Dundo - The Border Guard Police in eastern Lunda Norte province has prevented an attempted illegal entry of 560 citizens of the Democratic Republic of Congo into Angolan territory, whose aim was to settle in diamond mining areas and reach the country's capital, Luanda.
The information was provided Wednesday by the spokesman for the National Police in Lunda Norte province, Mendes Tamba Tamba, noting that the immigrants, accompanied by 117 children, had been expelled from the Chissanda border post.
He said that 112 Angolan citizens were also prevented from leaving the country (Angola) to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Since March 2020, the Angolan state has decided to close river and land borders, due to Covid-19.
According to the official, even with this measure, Congolese and Angolans continue to try to violate the borders, to illegally settle in the two territories (Angola and DRC).
He said that in many cases, the immigrants have found help from Angolan citizens living along the border, who pass themselves off as their relatives.
The province of Lunda Norte shares a border of about 770 kilometres with the DRC.
