Luena – At least 877,992 square metres were cleared out of mines in eastern Moxico province by Mining Consulting Group (MAG) from January to December, 2020.
The process included removal and destruction of 120 anti-personnel mines, 55 antitank, 14,692 several kinds of grenade as well as 12,355 ammunition of small arms.
The National Inter-sector Commission for Demining and Humanitarian Assistance (CNIDAH) said Saturday that there was a decrease, compared to the previous period, but would not reveal the figure.
The CNIDAH’s representative, Chile Manuel Chicanha, told Angop in Luena city that only MAG is carrying out the clearing process, as other operators have not been operating since 2014,
He mentioned, among others, INAD, Infrastructure and Engineering Division of the East Military Region as well as the 7th Demining Brigade of the Security Affairs Office to the President, as being at stand still.
The He also recalled that the province still has a total of 169,039 suspect zones with landmines.
Moxico municipality is leading the list with 46, followed by Alto – Zambeze 38, Léua (22), and Luau (21).
