Luanda - Hundreds of citizens who live in the Angolan capital, Luanda, paid tribute on Sunday to the former President of the Republic, José Eduardo dos Santos, who died last week in Barcelona, Spain, victim of an illness.
José Eduardo dos Santos, born on 28 August 1942 in Luanda, died on the 8th of this month. He was the son of Avelino Eduardo dos Santos and Jacinta José Paulino.
In addition to the national mourning that ended Friday, on Sunday many people visited the Republic Square to pay homage and praise the deeds of the former president who led Angola from September 1979 to September 2017.
The First Lady of the Republic, Ana Dias Lourenço, also paid her respect before the image bearing an effigy of the late leader. She laid a white flower and signed the book of condolence.
The former governor of Lunda Sul Province, Cândida Narciso, signed the book of condolence in tears.
At the end she stressed that the former president´s actions had a great impact on the life of the country and gave back the Angolan people’s dignity.
Meanbwhile, the citizen Osvaldo Gerónimo Mueneputo said it was a moment of sadness for the loss of the leader who brought peace and stability to the country. On her turn, Laura André, said that José Eduardo dos Santos was the “father of the nation”.
The deputy secretary of OMA, the ruling party’s female wing, in the Municipality of Belas, Teresa Dias, said this was a deserved tribute to a great peacemaker, teacher and adviser.
The 84-year old Maria Filipe da Silva said “Dos Santos, who took over from Neto, was a good president, so may God grant him eternal rest”.
The public memorial service for the death of the former President of the Republic closes this Sunday, although national mourning ended Friday.
