Luanda – some 30,000 criminal cases were resolved in Angola by guarantee judges, in the period from May 2023 to June 2024, according to data from the Superior Council of the Judiciary (CSMJ), presented on Thursday by the president of the organ, Joel Leonardo.
According to the judge-president of the Supreme Court, around 17 thousand release warrants and 16 thousand bail warrants were registered.
When speaking at the meeting of the heads of bodies involved in the Administration of Justice in Angola, the magistrate said that the numbers are positive, but there is a need to increasingly refine the performance of the Support Units for Guarantee Judges.
In another sense, he defended the observance of the legal process for all those involved in acts of vandalization of public property, within the framework of the criminal principles of guarantees.
“We must continue to provide swift treatment to cases involving damage to railway lines, water pipes, public network cables and cabins, train windows, solar panels, among other assets”, he highlighted.
He highlighted that the democratic maturity sought in Angola requires that the supreme objective of law, justice, be achieved through equitable, transparent and fair judicial processes.
On the occasion, he said that the aim is to ensure the legality of judicial acts, but also to maintain social peace and incorporate a good sense of justice, a spirit of high levels of competence, cooperation, collaboration, respect and politeness in serving users.
About 160 guarantee judges in Angola took office from May 2, 2023, in the 18 judicial provinces, in the Supreme Court and in the three courts of relationship existing in the country (Luanda, Benguela and Huíla).
The figure of the guarantee judge is a recent consecration in the legal system, within the framework of constitutional reforms in the country and its role is to monitor the acts of the Public Prosecutor's magistrates, in the preparatory instruction phase and beyond. FMA/VIC/DOJ
