Luanda - Angolan head of State João Lourenço received Tuesday in Luanda a message from the President of the government of Spain, Pedro Sanchez, whose content has not been disclosed.

The message was delivered by the ambassador of the European country to Angola, Manuel Lejarreta, during an audience the head of State João Lourenço granted to him.  

At the end of the meeting, the Spanish diplomat told the press that the audience also discussed the cooperation between the countries in the coming years. 

Lejarreta, who described Angola-Spain ties as "quite strong," noted that the two countries maintained a political dialogue and excellent commercial relations. 

Development of bilateral relations 

Angola/Spain bilateral relations are based on the General Cooperation Agreement, signed on 20 May 1987, and the Complementary Agreement to the General Agreement signed in November of the same year. 

The presence of Spanish companies in Angola helped to boost the two countries Cooperation in the business sector. 

Spain has over 60 companies operating in Angola in different sectors, with stress to energy, banking, construction and agriculture fields. 

In 2008, Spain granted to Angola a credit line of 600 million euros to boost bilateral cooperation.

Another 500 million euros, managed by the Spanish Export Credit Insurance Company-CESCE was granted in 2009, aimed to boost the two countries exports. 

With those credit lines, Angola and Spain reached a business volume of approximately  1 billion euros in 2011, compared to 750 million euros in 2010. 

In 2017, Angola exported goods worth 939 million euros. 98 percent of this figure is generated by oil, with a 19.3 percent increase compared to 2016. 

Angola is Spain's seventeenth supplier of oil, accounting for 2.3 percent of the crude oil consumed in the Iberian Peninsula.

At the African level, it is positioned as the fourth supplier and third customer.
