Luanda – President João Lourenço on Thursday said Angola relies on the support of young people to improve the country’s economy and enhancement.
“We are relying on your contribution to help the Executive find the best solutions to the problems that afflict young people, such as education, employment, integration into the business world and housing, among others,” Lourenço said at the opening of the 9th JMPLA (MPLA Youth wing)Congress.
The President of the MPLA stressed that the Ordinary Congress will elect new governing bodies for the party's youth organization, its first national secretary and the new National Committee, which will certainly make the JMPLA a more dynamic, inclusive organization that is increasingly closer to young Angolans and the society in general.
João Lourenço said he expects the JMPLA to reflect the hopes and desires of young Angolans, promote ethics and civic-mindedness, patriotism, political tolerance and respect for the elderly, women and children and the most vulnerable.
The MPLA leader called on young people to be frontline in preventing public property from being vandalized, fight against the trafficking and smuggling of goods, drugs and homophobia, the disrespect for national symbols, domestic violence and the mistreatment of children and crime in general.
João Lourenço instructed the party's youth organization to be committed to the environment, to climate change, its consequences and ways of mitigating them.
“A JMPLA that takes care of educating young people about the need to protect the environment, promoting volunteer work campaigns to collect garbage and plastic in particular, campaigns to reforest mangroves and other species in deforested areas, or even programs to protect animal species threatened by poaching or on the verge of extinction,” the president said.
Running under the motto “JMPLA - For the Homeland at the Service of Youth”, the Congress brings together 1,795 delegates to discuss changes to the organization's statutes, adjustments to the Programmatic Plan (2024/2029) patriotism, pride, love and devotion to the homeland.
The three-day congress will also align the JMPLA with the political, social and economic transformations underway in Angola.
JMPLA was founded on November 23, 1962, in Leopoldville (now Kinshasa), in the Democratic Republic of Congo, in the context of the first national liberation war.ART/TED/AMP
