Dundo - The governor of Angola’s eastern Lunda-Norte province Deolinda Vilarinho reiterated Tuesday that the local government will continue to implement actions to secure socio-economic reintegration of refugees from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) settled in Lóvua camp in 2017.
Deolinda Satula made the statement at the presentation of the new head of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Lunda-Norte, Jasmini Rodríguez, stressing that her government has been given special attention to safety and integration of the refugees into the society.
The governor pointed out that in addition to health, justice and education services, the local government, in partnership with the UNHCR, has supported refugee self-income initiatives, with an emphasis on family farming.
Deolinda Vilarinho called for the UNHCR to continue to develop actions to promote entrepreneurship that stimulate a culture of self-income.
In May 2017, an initial group of 35,000 citizens from the DRC arrived in the province of Lunda Norte, fleeing violence in the Kassai area, a crisis that led to the declaration of an emergency situation.
The UNHCR currently controls 6,222 refugees in the Lóvua camp and 3,000 in Dundo city.HD/TED/AMP
