Lubango – The Huíla Province governor, Nuno Muhapi, has expressed his determination to continue improving the health system by investing in the construction and rehabilitation of more than hospital units in order to make it more humanised and accessible to everyone.
The province's health network consists of 312 units, including medical posts, health centres, municipal, provincial and general hospital units. The main problem for the municipalities is the lack of ambulances.
The governor highlighted that this investment aims to continue the actions which already started three years ago with emphasis on the inauguration of the Irene Neto maternity hospital in March 2023, the completion of the first phase of the rehabilitation and modernisation of the António Agostinho Neto central hospital in Lubango, as well as the start of the second phase, whose works are well underway.
“These are certainly investments that will allow more speciality rooms to be opened that didn't exist before. Likewise, construction and rehabilitation work is underway on the municipal hospitals of Caluquembe and Gambos, and health centres and posts have been made available to the population," said the governor.
To him, health is a fundamental right of the citizens and taking it into account the provincial government will continue working in collaboration with the communities to promote prevention, education and fair access to health care by investing in primary care with the acquisition of crucial medicine, ambulances, as well as the ongoing training for technicians with the aim of making medical care more accessible, viable and patient-centred.
Education is another focus of the Huíla government and for this reason it is planning to build new classrooms.
Nuno Muhapi emphasised that education is an indisputable factor in development and progress, as it transforms the future of children and young people. For this reason, he expressed his gratitude to the teachers, whose dedication, commitment and passion played a fundamental role in training and creating competences and technical skills for the people of Huíla.
Huíla is one of Angola's 18 provinces and is located in the south of the country, being the richest province in the southern part of Angola. Its capital is the city and municipality of Lubango.
According to the National Statistics Institute's population projections for 2024, the province will have over 3 million inhabitants spread over its 79,023 square kilometres, making it the most populous province after Luanda.
It has 14 municipalities, namely Lubango, Humpata, Chibia, Gambos, Quilengues, Cacula, Quipungo, Matala, Caconda, Caluquembe, Chicomba, Chipindo, Cuvango and Jamba.
