Luanda - Angolan authorities hand over Thursday the death certificates to the family members of the victims of May 27, 1977, the minister of Justice and Human Rights Francisco Queiroz has said.
The minister announced this to the press at the end of the 5th Session of the Cabinet Council, chaired by the president João Lourenço on Wednesday.
The government official said that there were many requests for the issuance of death certificates, stressing that the delivery of the documents symbolises the “concrete expression of reconciliation and forgiveness, in memory of all the victims of this occurrence”.
He said that the government will promote celebration on the May 27th, to send a clear signal that "the 27th of May should not go unnoticed, but remembered, so that it never happens again".
He announced that ceremonies will be held in Luanda, with stress to Santa Ana cemetery and at Independence Square, where wreaths will be deposited.
This will be the first time that the Government pays homage to the victims of May 27, 1977.
On May 27, 1977, an alleged coup attempt allegedly staged by a group of MPLA leaders and activists, aimed to overthrow the then party leadership, was violently repressed by security forces resulting in thousands of deaths.
