Luanda - The Government of Angola, on behalf of the President of the Republic, João Lourenço, mediator of the normalization of politico-diplomatic relations, cooperation and tensions between the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Rwanda, strongly condemns the seizure of the territory of Masisi, Province of North-Kivu, by Movement 23 (M23), which took place on Jan 4, 2025.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Jan 7, it states that this irresponsible action seriously compromises efforts to pacify the conflict prevailing in the Eastern region of the DRC and represents a flagrant and unacceptable violation of the ceasefire that has been in force since August 4, 2024.
In this context, the Government of Angola expresses its deep concern regarding the escalation of the conflict and the illegal conquest of territory in the Democratic Republic of Congo, also posing a violation of the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the DRC, as stipulated in the Constitutive Act of the African Union and the Charter of the United Nations.
