Cuito – The governor of the central Bié province Celeste Adolfo on Friday highlighted the existing cooperation and friendly ties between Angola and Cuba, as they generate numerous benefits for Angolans.
According to the governor, the benefits include the achievement of national independence, the conquest of peace, training of cadres, medical assistance, education, civil reconstruction, among others.
The governor made the statement in Cuito city during the commemorations of the 71st anniversary of the Assault on the Moncada Barracks (July 26), which represents the beginning of the Cuban revolution.
Celeste Adolfo stressed that Angola and the Bié province in particular, will always be grateful to Cuba, adding that the region continues to rely on the support of Cubans to face socio-economic development challenges.
The governor congratulated the Cuban community living in the province on the 71st anniversary of the assault on the Moncada Barracks, given its importance in the historic struggle for freedom by the people of that Caribbean country.
The event was also used to bid farewell to 24 Cubans, including doctors and university professors, who have finished their work in the province of Bié under the bilateral relation cooperation between the two friend nations.
The specialists are part of a total of 118 who make up the Cuban community living in the province, hired to help fill the shortage of staff in this central region of Angola.
In Bié, where they stayed for around five years, they worked in the province's nine municipalities in the health sector, while in higher education they worked at the Escola Superior Pedagógica and the Instituto Superior Politécnico, two public university institutions.
The professionals were awarded diplomas in recognition of their commitment and dedication.
On the occasion, Yamilia Ramires Salina, provincial coordinator of the Cuban community in Bié, spoke of the possibility for new staff to be deployed in the province, having reiterated the commitment of the professionals in giving their best for the benefit of the locals.
The assault on the Moncada barracks in 1953 was the first attempt by Fidel Castro and his comrades to overthrow the dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista.
The aim of the action was to enter the barracks and take the weapons that were there to distribute among the population and start an overthrow of General Fulgencio Batista. VKY/PLB/AMP
