Luanda - The Minister of State and Chief of Staff of the President of the Republic, Adão de Almeida, said Monday in Luanda that the country is committed to the implementation of renewable energies, especially photovoltaic.
Speaking at the opening of the international conference on the environment marking the 45th anniversary of the Attorney General's Office (PGR), the minister said Angola has been making a significant and unprecedented energy transition.
The minister pointed out that of the 1,400 megawatts of energy produced, 65 per cent already come from renewable sources, and in the next few years it should reach 70 percent.
Adão de Almeida added that the country has been reducing its dependence on energy produced with fossil fuels and consequently reducing the excess carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
The minister explained that the effects of climate change in Angola are particularly felt in the southern region, where there are regular cycles of drought, jeopardizing the lives of people and the local flora and fauna.
Mr. Almeida added that the government is implementing a structuring and ambitious program to combat drought in the south of the country, the first steps of which are already visible since the inauguration in 2022 of the Cafu canal in Cunene province.
He recalled that the project is already transporting water from the Cunene River to various locations in the province, covering 165 kilometers, benefiting more than 200,000 people and thousands of cattle.
"In the same vein, projects of a similar nature and size are under construction in Cunene province, namely the construction of the Due dam, in Camucuvo, and the construction of the Cova do Leão dam," the minister said.
Adão de Almeida said that projects are also being implemented in the provinces of Namibe and Huíla to ensure water supply to the populations affected by the drought.
In the field of mineral resources, the minister said that there are still situations of illegal exploitation that bring financial and environmental damage.
The first International Conference on the Environment running under the motto "The Public Prosecutor's Office and environmental protection, challenges and prospects", is part of the range of activities to mark the 45th anniversary of the PGR, which will be celebrated on April 27. LIN/VIC/TED/AMP
