Luanda - The National Strategy for Climate Change (ENAC) 2022-2035 will be presented by the Executive at the 28th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on the matter, to be held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE), from 30 to 12 of November, the Minister of the Environment, Ana Paula de Carvalho, announced on Tuesday in Luanda.
The information was advanced on the sidelines of the first ordinary session of the National Commission for Climate Change and Biodiversity, chaired by the Vice-President of the Republic, Esperança da Costa, as part of Angola's participation in COP 28.
According to the spokesperson for the event, during the meeting, five points were presented, among priorities and challenges of the Executive, whose plan includes several ministerial departments, with a view to reducing the percentage of greenhouse gases in the country.
He said that issues related to the State of Implementation of Climate Action in Angola were also analysed, with emphasis on the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), the Update of the National Biodiversity Strategy, the State of Play on Biodiversity, Climate Change and Desertification, the Decarbonisation of Electro-Mobility, as well as the Reduction of Polluting Vehicles and the Methane Emission Reduction Study in Angola. Ana Paula de Carvalho defined COP 28 as a special edition, because, in addition to the exhibition with a pavilion, Angola will have a courtroom for bilateral meetings and others.
“We will have a stand with televisions to display positive messages about our country”, he said, hoping that the country will have a dignified participation.
For the implementation of the National Strategy for Climate Change (ENAC) 2022-2035, according to the minister, there are, among others, the ministries of Energy and Water, with the energy transition, increasingly investing in clean energies, such as hydro and solar, Transport, which can contribute to decarbonization.
According to the minister, 'a lot is being done in terms of energy transition in the country, with great advances, both from the ministries of Energy and Water and Mineral Resources, Oil and Gas, which contribute to the reduction of carbon dioxide or greenhouse gases.
In addition to these actions, Ana Paula de Carvalho pointed out that there are others, namely the planting of mangroves, which is being financed by Sonangol, the issue of green hydrogen and waste management.
He pointed out that at COP 28, where Angola will be represented at the highest level, he expects the most developed countries to comply with the guidelines passed at COP 27 to pay the less developed or industrialized countries to reduce climate change.
Transport
On the other hand, the Minister of Transport, Ricardo de Abreu, stressed that during the meeting two issues were reviewed on decarbonization and electromobility, the creation of strategies for regulation in terms of tax benefits and the increase of electric vehicle charging stations.
The first ordinary session of the National Commission for Climate Change and Biodiversity also served to discuss the logistical aspects, especially the registration of delegates and acquisition of COP visas, accommodation, local transport and departure dates.
COP 28 is expected to be attended by approximately 200 world leaders, 30,000 delegates and 70,000 participants, including members of civil society, academia, companies and others, while the multisectoral Angolan delegation will include the public and private sectors. FMA/VIC/DOJ
