Luanda - The United States of America (USA) called on the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Rwanda for an immediate ceasefire in the conflict involving the two nations, spokesperson for the U.S. Department of State, Ms Tammy Bruce, reported Thursday.

Speaking to the press, she said that US Secretary of State, Marco Rúbio, in conversation with the president of the DRC, Félix Tshisekedi and with the Rwandan President, Paul Kagame, also called for accountability for abuses and violations of human rights.

He also called on the parties to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of each state.

Tammy Bruce stressed that they hope to see leaders returning to the Luanda peace process, led by Angola, as well as to the Nairobi process, with the aim to take steps to resolve the conflict.

She confirmed that the US remains diplomatically involved in the resolution of the conflict in eastern DRC and the Secretary of State is carrying out actions with the region's leaders.

The DRC is currently facing an armed conflict with the March 23rd movement (M23) rebel troops, supported by the Republic of Rwanda.

However, after capturing Goma, the capital of North Kivu province, in January 2025, the rebels advanced and on 16 February 2025 they took Bukavu, which is the second largest city in the east of the country and the capital of South Kivu.
