Soyo - The Angolan Media Regulatory Authority (ERCA) intends to continue developing a broad media literacy process to enable citizens to be aware of their rights and responsibilities.
This was announced Thursday in Soyo city, Zaire Province, by the chairman of ERCA's Board of Directors, Adelino de Almeida, at the opening of a lecture on “Press Freedom in Angola, Context and Challenges”, organized by the institution he leads.
He recalled that the right to inform and be informed is enshrined in the Constitution of the Republic of Angola (CRA), which is why he promised the organization’s commitment to media education for citizens.
The broad process is reflected in the promotion of talks and meetings that address the country's media practice in various regions of the country, aimed at journalists and citizens from different social strata.
Adelino de Almeida recognized, however, that this was a difficult task, as he considered that freedom of the press in Angola is an interesting topic that still divides opinion, which is why he considers it important to continually reflect on this concept and on the performance of the public and private media outlets.
He explained that in these matters, ERCA is careful and invites experts in the field to interact with different strata of society, in order to clarify the challenges facing the media.
Speaking on behalf of the provincial governor, Adriano Mendes de Carvalho, the provincial director of Media, Aguinelo Alberto Mocolo, praised ERCA's initiative and asked that it be continued in the region.
The lecture was headed by journalist and academic Carlos Calombo.
The event was attended by journalists from various public information bodies, lawyers, academics, students, civil servants, representatives of traditional and religious authorities, members of the defense and order bodies.
