Luanda - UNITA on Thursday submitted an appeal to the Constitutional Court (TC), to contest the results of the general elections held on 24 August.
The appeal emerges in the scope of the disclosure of the definitive results announced by the National Electoral Commission (CNE), which give the MPLA a victory of 51.17%, followed by UNITA with 43.95%.
In a statement, the president of UNITA, Adalberto Costa Júnior, reaffirmed that the parallel counting of his party does not give victory to the MPLA, due to that they requested the TC to examine the summary reports produced in the 13,000 polling stations.
According to the politician, the party is only now pronouncing itself regarding the definitive data because it was waiting for the legal deadlines to be met and to conclude the parallel tallying of the votes mentioned in the summary reports, adding that it is “a sensitive and complex process”.
“UNITA and its partners in the FPU (United Patriotic Front) do not recognize the definitive results published this week by the CNE, because they do not reflect the electoral truth”, he said.
Adalberto Costa Júnior went on to say that he expects the CNE and the TC to perform their functions in strict respect for the Constitution and the Laws, having requested comparison of the minutes in the possession of the CNE with the copies in possession of the political parties.
Mr Costa Júnior stated that they will do everything so that all the votes can be effectively tabulated and respected in the ambit of the appeal just filed.
To recall that last Tuesday, the CNE turned down two complaints presented by UNITA and one by CASA-CE in which they contested the definitive results.
According to the definitive results published by the National Electoral Commission (CNE), the MPLA won the elections with 51.17% (3.209,429 votes), resulting in the re-election of its presidential candidate, João Lourenço, and the winning of 124 parliamentary seats.
The results give UNITA 43.95% (2.756.786 votes, winning 90 MPs), PRS 1,14% (71,351 votes, 2 MPs), FNLA 1,06% (66,337 votes, 2 MPs) and PHA with 1,02% (63,749 votes, 2 MPs).
CASA-CE with 0.76% (47,446 votes), APN with 0.48% (30,139 votes) and P-NJANGO with 0.42% (26,867 votes) did not get any MPs.
