Caxito – The National Union for Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) launched on Sunday in Caxito Municipality, northern Bengo Province, its pre-campaign for the August 24 polls, with a mass political event to be headed by the party’s vice-president, Simão Dembo.
While speaking in the opening act, the politician of the largest opposition party in Angola requested militants to flock to the polls and vote for alternation and its candidate for President of the Republic.
The politician recommended party members to refrain from violence and vandalism before during and after the elections, emphasising that political activities must be carried out in an orderly manner.
The mass political event was preceded by a march in the scope of the electoral pre-campaign and the 50th anniversary celebration of UNITA´s female wing, Angolan Woman League (LIMA).
However, in 2017 general elections, UNITA won 51 seats in Parliament, while the MPLA got 150.
This year's elections, which will have the participation of Angolan citizens in the diaspora for the first time, are the fifth ones in Angola´s history, after 1992, 2008, 2012 and 2017.
Seven parties and one coalition of political parties submitted their candidacies for the upcoming general polls, namely MPLA, UNITA, PRS, CASA-CE, FNLA, PHA, APN and P-NJANGO.
There are roughly 14.3 million voters expected to cast their ballots, including 22,560 Angolan citizens abroad.
The previous election was contested on 23 August 2017 by six political parties, with the participation of 76.57% of approximately 9.3 million registered voters.
