Luanda - The CASA-CE Electoral Coalition has lost the 16 seats which it won in the 2017 elections, by obtaining only 46,750 votes corresponding to 0.75%, due to the results of Wednesday’s elections in Angola.
According to the latest provisional data from the National Electoral Commission (CNE), released on Thursday night, after 97.03% of the votes were counted, MPLA leads with 51.07%, which corresponds to 124 parliamentary seats against the 150 seats of the 2017 elections.
UNITA is in second place with 44.05% gaining 90 seats in the parliament. In the 2017 elections the party won 51 deputies and in this year´s election gained another 39 parliamentary seats.
PRS remains with its two parliamentary seats, while FNLA increased its number from one to two.
The PHA participated for the first time and got two seats in the parliament.
Two of the eight competing political forces did not get any parliamentary seat, namely APN with 29,740 votes (0,48%) and P-Njango, the latter “newcomer”, with 26, 268 (0,42%).
Abstention Rate
In these 2022 elections, there was an abstention rate of 54.35% in a universe of about 14.3 million voters.
In 2017 elections, the abstention rate was 43%. Official data indicates that in 2008 and 2012 it was 12.64% and 37.24%, respectively.
This poll had eight candidates for President of the Republic.
Of the approximately 14.3 million citizens, 22,560 of them living abroad voted for the first time.
The ballot also aimed at electing the country´s vice president and the 220 parliament members.
