Cuito – The National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) candidate for President of the Republic, Adalberto Costa Júnior, on Wednesday in Cuito City, central Bié Province, highlighted the importance of the elections, which he considered a moment of “democracy festival” for the country's development.
The politician, who has been in Bié Province since Tuesday, was speaking during a rally, while addressing militants, sympathisers and friends of his political party, in the ambit of the campaign for this August 24 general elections.
In his speech of over one hour, Adalberto Costa Júnior said also that the media should treat equally all political forces contesting in this electoral process.
The UNITA leader criticized the current government, pointing out to “the reduced capacity of water supply to the population of Bié Province, the rehabilitation of the roads and lack of doctors in hospitals”.
He also spoke of his party´s government programme, in case of winning the elections, with focus on the fight against poverty and hunger, reform of the education sector, health and inclusion of various civil society sensitivities.
In this regard, the politician recommended that militants, sympathisers and all national citizens in to get in touch with the party's governance programme, which is available to the population.
This year's elections, with the participation of Angolans in the diaspora for the first time, are the fifth ones in Angola´s history, since 1992.
Bié province has 783,684 voters registered, who will exercise their right to vote in 861 polling stations.
Roughly 14.3 million Angolans are expected to vote, including 22,560 residing abroad.
