Luanda - The ruling MPLA and the main opposition UNITA parties announced Friday (8th) the suspension of their activities scheduled for Saturday due to the death of the former President of the Republic, José Eduardo dos Santos.
Speaking to Angop on behalf of MPLA, the second provincial secretary Nelson Funete spoke of the suspension of all political activities of the party until the end of the five-day national mourning decreed by the government, starting at 0:00 on Saturday.
While the Luanda provincial secretary of UNITA Nelito Ekuiki announced the decision on the twitter, saying that the party canceled the mass rally scheduled for Saturday.
Like CASA-CE and FNLA, the two largest parties in the Angolan political arena had scheduled mass political events in Luanda, as part of the August 24 election.
The former President of Angola, José Eduardo dos Santos, died Friday at the age of 79 years old in Spain, victim of illness.
The five-day national mourning is extensive across the country and in diplomatic and consular missions.
According to the Presidential Decree, during mourning, the national flag will be flown at half-mast and all shows and public demonstrations will be cancelled.
