Luanda - The Angolan Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Esmeralda Mendonça, on Thursday called on the African Union (AU) to mobilize forces to better address the difficult humanitarian situation on the African continent.

The diplomat made the statement during an audience with the ambassador of the Kingdom of Spain to Angola, Manuel Lejarreta, with whom she discussed regional and multilateral issues.

Esmeralda Mendonça stressed the importance of respecting the ceasefire in the conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo and that the Angolan government remains committed to the pacification of the region.

The diplomats reiterated interest in the holding of the International Conference on Financing for Development, considering that it would be a good platform to prioritize issues related to debt relief and ensuring equitable access to financial resources for the least developed countries in Africa.

There was also recognition of the need to find peaceful and sustainable solutions, particularly for Africa, to give the continent greater unity and a fairer voice in global financial governance.

Ambassador Manuel Lejarreta presented the invitation of the Secretary-General of the United Nations to the President of the Republic, João Lourenço, to participate in the conference, which will be held in Seville from June 30 to July 3.

The United Nations Resident Coordinator in Angola, Zahira Virani, on his turn, stressed the importance of the Head of State's presence at the meeting, as President of the African Union, as well as the symbolism of his commitment to international issues and the mobilization of international resources for sustainable development issues in Africa.FMA/ART/AMP
