Luanda - Angola highlighted, this Wednesday, the cruciality of defining selection criteria for the election of the leadership of the African Union Commission (AUC), scheduled for February 2025.
Angola's position was presented by the minister of Foreign Affairs, Téte António, during a virtual meeting of Heads of State and Government members of the African Union (AU) Conference Table, representing the President of the Republic, João Lourenço.
In his speech, Téte António welcomed the initiative of the Mauritanian statesman, current acting president of the AU, for convening the meeting of the Conference Table, before the 22nd extraordinary session of the organization's Executive Council.
The meeting aimed to promote consultations between the Bureau Members, the President of the Commission and the AU Legal Council on the process of electing senior leaders of the AU Commission, scheduled for February 2025, taking into account the doubts that persist regarding the selection criteria.
This is the first meeting of the Bureau of the African Union Conference, convened by Mohamed Ould Ghazouani, for consultations on the 22nd extraordinary session of the Executive Council, scheduled for March 15, 2024, in Addis Ababa, capital of Ethiopia and headquarters of the African Union.
The 22nd extraordinary session of the Executive Council, which will be preceded by a meeting of the Permanent Representatives Committee (PRC), on March 11, 2024, takes place in compliance with a decision taken from the 37th ordinary summit of Heads of State and Government of the AU, of February 18, 2024, aiming to resolve the impasse recorded in the aforementioned matter.
