Luanda - Deputies to the Angola National Assembly congratulated the Head of State, João Lourenço, on his election, last Saturday, Feb 15, to the Presidency of the African Union (AU) Organization.

João Lourenço took office during the AU 38th Summit of Heads of State and Government, held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The Vote of Congratulations for the Election of the President was approved during the II Ordinary Plenary Meeting of the National Assembly, which takes place on Thursday, Feb 20.

According to the document, parliamentarians learned “with great satisfaction and joy” of the election of the Head of State to the position of President of the African Union for the year 2025.

They state that this act is recognition of the commitment of the Angolan statesman, as well as the role that Angola has been playing in favor of development and peace on the African continent.

Therefore, they congratulate President João Lourenço for “such a high distinction”, certain that, in the exercise of his mandate, he will know how to find the best ways to solve the multiple challenges that Africa faces.

The African Union (AU), today made up of 55 members, was created on July 9, 2002, in Durban, South Africa, replacing the Organization of African Unity (OAU), founded on May 25, 1963, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

João Lourenço is the 23rd president of the African Union since the creation of the Organization before Mohamed Ould Cheikh AI-Ghazouani, President of Mauritania.
