Addis Ababa - The African Union Peace and Security Council (PSC) will meet on Friday, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, with the participation of the Angolan Head of State, João Lourenço, to discuss the situation in Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The meeting takes place on the sidelines of the 38th AU State and Government Summit, during which João Lourenço will take over the rotating presidency of the continental organization.

The event will be chaired by the Head of State of Equatorial Guinea, Teodoro Obiang Nguema, in his capacity as Chairperson of the PSC for this month.

Situation in DRC

The situation in the DRC has deteriorated rapidly in recent months, especially in the provinces of North Kivu and South Kivu, where the March 23 movement (M23) took over parts of territory in eastern DRC.

The armed group started to advance into South Kivu after taking control of Goma, capital of the neighboring province of North Kivu, which borders Rwanda, at the end of last month.

The escalation of violence since the beginning of 2025 has forced the displacement of more than 400,000 people, causing hundreds of deaths and violations of human rights.

Sudan

After 20 months of civil war, Sudan is suffering the worst humanitarian crisis in the world. According to experts, the situation will worsen for the civilian population.

The civil war in Sudan has unleashed violence, death, hunger and disease on an almost unimaginable scale. Tens of thousands of people have been killed, 12 million have been displaced and, with the country on the verge of starvation, more than half of its 48 million citizens suffer from acute food insecurity.
