Accra - The Executive Council of the African Union (AU) met this Thursday in Accra, Ghana, in its 45th ordinary session, where, among other topics, it analyzed the issue of implementing the African Humanitarian Agency (AfHA).
The event, taking place until the 19th of this month, is preparatory to the 6th biannual coordination meeting of the AU, and the documents for this major event must be prepared, including the Final Declaration, the Report on the participation of the African Union in the G20, as well as on African Candidacies in the International System.
The election and appointment of three judges of the African Court on Human and Peoples' Rights (AfCHPR), the chair of the board of the Pan-African University (PAU), two members of the African Space Council, a member of the Advisory Council of the African Union against Corruption, as well as the appointment of members of the African Union Board of External Auditors (BoEAs-AU) will also be assessed.
The Executive Council is composed of Ministers of Foreign Affairs or other ministers or authorities designated by the governments of the Member States and has the mission of, among others, making decisions on policies in areas of common interest to the Member States, and is also responsible to the Assembly.
Among its responsibilities is also monitoring the implementation of policies formulated by the Assembly, and its decisions are taken by consensus or, when consensus is not possible, by a two-thirds majority.
It is currently chaired by Egypt and meets at least twice a year in an ordinary session.
Meetings are generally held before the Assembly Summit and in the same location.
The Executive Council may also meet in extraordinary sessions at the request of its Chairperson, any Member State or the Chairperson of the AU Commission, in consultation with the Chairperson of the Assembly and upon approval by two-thirds of all Member States Extraordinary sessions are held at the AU headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, unless a Member State invites the Council to meet in its country.
