Luanda – Angola’s Commission for Reconciliation in Memory of Victims of Political Conflicts (CIVICOP) has so far collected over 700 samples that are being analyzed in laboratories, the Minister of Justice and Human Rights, Marcy Lopes, said Tuesday.
According to the minister, who was speaking on the sidelines of the Commission's 1st meeting of 2024, at least (9) bodies have so far been handed over to their families.
Marcy Lopes explained that various actions have been made throughout the country, specifically in places where the Commission knows about the existence of bodies of people who had died as a result of political conflicts.
"We have been counting on the collaboration of citizens and organizations that have relevant information so that the Commission's work can be successful", the minister said.
CIVICOP was set up in 2019 under instructions of the President of the Republic, João Lourenço, with a view to drawing up a general plan to honor the victims of the political conflicts that took place in Angola between 11 November 1975 (Independence Day) and 4 April 2002 (the end of the war).
The Plan for Reconciliation in Memory of the Victims of Political Conflicts includes, among other things, the issuing of death certificates and the construction of a single memorial for all the victims of the conflicts recorded in the country. FMA/SC/TED/AMP
