Luanda - President João Lourenço appointed, this Monday, three new provincial governors, bringing the total number of women occupying these roles to six.
The new appointees are the governor of Bié, Celeste Elavoco David Adolfo, who previously served as municipal administrator of Andulo; Suzana Fernanda Pemba Massia de Abreu, appointed to lead the Province of Cabinda, having previously been municipal administrator of Belize.
The list also includes Filomena Elizabete Chitula Miza Aires, appointed governor of Lunda Norte, who leaves the municipality of Luau, Moxico, as administrator.
The newly appointed female officials are joining the governors of Cunene, Gerdina Didalelwa, Bengo’s Maria Antónia Nelumba, and Mara Quiosa who left the province of Cabinda to perform the same functions in the centre-west Cuanza Sul Province.
The appointment of more women to occupy prominent positions reveals the government's intention to promote gender parity.
At central government level, women have gained notoriety and occupied prominent positions, from the Vice-Presidency level, occupied by Esperança da Costa.
At the level of 23 ministerial portfolios, they occupy nine seats, the highest proportion ever, including a Minister of State.
The Angolan National Assembly (parliament) is also led by a woman, Carolina Cerqueira, while 37% of the seats in the parliament are occupied by women, placing the country in 8th place in Africa and 38th worldwide.
At the judicial level, the position of presiding judge of the Constitutional Court stands out, held by Laurinda Jacinto Prazeres Monteiro Cardoso.
Angola has promoted equal rights and opportunities, as well as implementing the National Action Plan to comply with UN Resolution 1325 (2000) on Women, Peace and Security.
