Luanda - President João Lourenço inspected on Saturday (22) the progress of the rehabilitation and expansion works at Américo Boavida Hospital, located in the municipality of Rangel, in Luanda.
The activity is part of a field trip that also includes visits to the works at the Burn Center, in the Kilamba satellite town, and Pedro Maria Tonha "Pedalé" Hospital, in the municipality of Samba.
At Américo Boavida Hospital, whose works budgeted at USD 148 mln are due to be completed in the upcoming November, the Head of State received detailed information on the works at the hospital/school and visited its diferent units.
The intervention was due to the poor condition of some areas of the hospital unit that showed strong signs of infiltration and were at risk of collapse, thus reducing the capacity to provide care due to the need to close some wards and services.
The project involves the requalification of the main building and the construction of new auxiliary blocks.
Once completed, the hospital will have a capacity for 604 beds, compared to the previous 481, and will have 4 more floors (block M), in addition to the existing building, which has 7.
The work also includes the construction of new blocks O (dormitories), N (training center), Q (morgue) and P (infectious diseases).
Block M, with an area of 16,500 m2, includes a surgical department, nuclear medicine, trauma area, accident and emergency department, sterilisation services, intensive care units, imaging, coronary care unit, among other services.
The stage of physical completion of the renovation and expansion works at Hospital Américo Boavida is around 19.93%, and the financial completion 19.67%.
In April 2024, the emergency room and all other services at the Américo Boavida Hospital in Luanda were closed and patients were transferred to the new Viana General Hospital and to other hospital Units.
The health sector has been strengthened in the last two years with the authorization, by the President of the Republic, for the construction or rehabilitation of several hospitals throughout the country.
Américo Boavida is the 2nd largest hospital in Luanda. The hospital unit had been operating with limitations for years, due to poor of conditions.
Founded in 1958 as “Hospital de São Paulo”, the Américo Boavida University Hospital (HUAB), also known as the University Hospital of Luanda, is the main medical-hospital complex of the Faculty of Medicine of the Agostinho Neto University (UAN).
It is a vital campus-hub for teaching, research and extension purposes, and is considered the most important university hospital in the country in honor of the physician and anti-colonial leader Américo Alberto de Barros e Assis Boavida, one of the heroes of the Angolan independence process.
