Geneva – The National Assembly Carolina Cerqueira on Thursday in Geneva (Switzerland) advocated strengthening the role of parliaments in local and global governance.
The politician, who was speaking at the first preparatory meeting for the 6th World Conference of Speakers of Parliaments, which is taking place from 16 to 17 May suggested greater dynamism in the defense of human rights and strengthened rule of law and people's security in the face of the vulnerability they are subjected in crisis situations and natural disasters.
Carolina Cerqueira said multilateralism, principles and values in defense of peace should be strengthened through diplomacy, solidarity and parliamentary cooperation.
In her view, the link between governments and civil society must also be strengthened, as must the inclusion of young people in parliaments and the recognition of women's contribution to decision-making, especially at political level, based on UN resolutions and the procedures that must be implemented by member states.
The leader of the Angolan parliament, who centered her speech on the state of the world and the future of multilateralism, reaffirmed the commitment of her country and its institutions to the values and principles of democracy.
Carolina Cerqueira guaranteed the building of strong and credible institutions, as recommended by the 147th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) held in Luanda in 2023.
Carolina Cerqueira reiterated that the 6th World Conference of Presidents of Parliaments, to be held in 2025, will take place in a context of global and regional crisis, which each country will have to face in the face of the challenges posed by the food security crisis, climate change, gender equality, peace and international and regional stability.
The preparatory meeting will reflect on the current challenges of world peace, sustainable development and democracy.
The parliamentarians will also analyze the results of previous conferences, with an emphasis on the evolution of inter-parliamentary cooperation over the years and the priority of the member states parliaments in the face of global and regional geopolitical challenges.
Carolina Cerqueira was elected, together with her counterparts from Côte d'Ivoire, Tanzania and Nigeria, as a member of the Preparatory Committee for the 6th World Conference of Speakers of Parliaments, representing the African group. ART/AMP
