Luanda – Angola ruling MPLA party on Wednesday praised the country’s president João Lourenço diplomatic initiatives for the pacification in Africa, with emphasis on the eastern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and the fight against terrorism and unconstitutional changes of government in the continent.
In a message on the 2nd anniversary of the Day of Peace and Reconciliation in Africa marked on January 31, the MPLA's Political Bureau highlights President João Lourenço's commitment to the socio-economic and political-cultural development of the region.
"For Angola in particular, January 31has a special significance, marked by the designation of President João Lourenço as Champion for Peace and Reconciliation in Africa," reads the message.
The message reaffirms support to the Angolan government to strengthen cooperation with African countries, seeking consensus on the continent's major issues, with an emphasis on effective peace.
It considers that the date represents a collective commitment to peace and social cohesion at national, regional and continental levels.
"The MPLA Political Bureau welcomes this occasion, wishing for times to come marked by actions that promote the development of the "Cradle of Humankind Continent", breaking down existing obstacles," the message said.
The Day of Peace and Reconciliation in Africa was established following the Declaration of the 16th Extraordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union (AU) on Terrorism and Unconstitutional Changes of Government in Africa held in May 2022 in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea.
