Luanda - Angolan President João Lourenço attended Saturday the opening ceremony of the second edition of the African Basketball Championship for athletes playing in Africa, "AFROCAN ' 2023" taking place in Angolan capital, Luanda.
Accompanied by the First Lady, Ana Dias Lourenço, members of the Executive and of the Angolan Basketball Federation, the Angolan Head of State watched the match between Angola and Mali for the group B of the competition.
The competition that will be held until July 16 brings together 12 national teams.
The holding of AFROCAN 2023 in Angola follows a memorandum of understanding signed in February, in Luanda, between the International Basketball Federation FIBA and the Angolan Basketball Federation (FAB).
DR Congo are the defending champions, after lifting the trophy in 2019.
The second edition of the tournament was supposed to take place in 2021 but was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
In the 2019 edition held in Bamako, Mali, Angola finished third.
