Luanda - National Electoral Commission (CNE) rejected the complaint filed by the political party UNITA on the method of release of the provisional results of the fifth general elections conducted on 24 August.
According to CNE spokesperson Lucas Quilundo, “the claim, signed by the party (UNITA)’s representative Horácio Junjuvile, was analysed at the extraordinary session of the institution’s plenary.
He said that CNE rejected the request made alleging irregularly unfounded, adding that it does not correspond to what is established in the Organic Law On the General Elections”.
The official told the press at the end of the assessment session that UNITA request skipped some details that should have been provided immediately during the release of the provisional results, which gave victory to the MPLA and its candidate João Lourenço.
He noted that the disclosure of the provisional results is based on paragraph 1 of Article 135, of the Organic Law on General Elections, and what UNITA claims is based on Article 123, which has to do with the Minutes of the Table of the Polling Stations and not exactly with the release of the provisional results, by the CNE.
Therefore, considering that the release of the provisional results corresponds to Article Number 135 of the Organic Law on General Elections, the Plenary of the CNE unanimously decided to reject the claim filed by UNITA.
“In general, the Observation Missions were unanimous in their reports, having admitted that the general elections in Angola took place in accordance with international requirements and fundamentally in accordance with the legal procedures of the Angolan Constitution”, highlighted Lucas Quilundo.
However, he added that as soon as the Provincial Electoral Commissions start receiving the Minutes of the Plenary Sessions of these Local Bodies, the National Scrutiny Center, the CNE Plenary, under the terms of the Law, will gather for the Final Tabulation Minutes of Wednesday's election.
With 97.03% of the votes counted across the country and abroad, CNE said on Thursday the MPLA, which garnered 51.07% of the votes, obtained 124 MPs.
While UNITA (44.05%) got 90 MPs, followed by the PRS, the FNLA and PHA with two seats each.
CASA-CE with 0.75% (46,750) did not get any seat, as did the APN with 0.48% (29,740) and P-NJANGO with 0.42% of the votes (26,268).
Meanwhile, UNITA leader, Adalberto Costa Júnior, said Friday in Luanda province that his party "does not recognise" the provisional results of the 24 August elections, released by this legal body.
