Mbanza Kongo - In several provinces of Angola MPLA militants have been taking to the streets this Monday (29 August) to celebrate the victory of the party and its candidate for President of the Republic, João Lourenço, in the polls, following the disclosure of the definitive results of the general elections.
The definitive results of the fifth elections, held on 24 August, were made public Monday by the National Electoral Commission (CNE). The figures confirmed the winning of the MPLA and its candidate João Lourenço with 51.17% of the votes and with this the party obtained 124 parliamentary seats.
For that reason, in some provinces the militants made marches, while in others they gathered in front of the party's provincial headquarters to celebrate the victory of MPLA and its candidate for President of the Republic, by an absolute majority.
Some of the representatives of the party in the provinces of Namibe, Huíla, Cuando Cubango, Cunene, Huambo, Zaire, Malanje and Moxico reiterated that their party will continue to work for the improvement of the population´s living condition.
Electoral results
In the 2017 general elections, which were won by qualified majority, MPLA elected five MPs in the constituencies of Malanje, Huíla, Cunene, Cuanza Norte and Cuanza Sul.
This is the fifth victory of MPLA since the first election that took place in 1992, won by absolute majority.
The MPLA won the present polls with 51.17% of the votes and got 124 seats in the National Assembly (Angolan parliament).
The final data made public by the CNE give UNITA 43,95% (2.756.786 votes, winning 90 MPs), PRS 1,14% (71,351 votes, 2 MPs), FNLA 1,06% (66,337 votes, 2 MPs) and PHA with 1,02% (63,749 votes, 2 MPs), CASA-CE with 0.76% (47,446 votes), APN with 0.48% (30,139 votes) and P-NJANGO with 0.42% (26,867 votes), the last three did not get any MPs.
Eight political forces ran in this suffrage, whose total number of voters was 6.454,109 (over 6.4 million), representing 44.82% of roughly 14.3 million registered voters.
