Addis Ababa – The Angolan citizen Pascoal António Joaquim was re-elected this Thursday in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, member of the African Union Advisory Board on Corruption (AUABC).
Pascoal Joaquim´s candidacy was approved by the Southern African Region.
In the election process - which included also two candidates from Botswana (Mophutholodi Molatudi and Érica Ndlovu) and Zambia (Yvonne Diakhate for re-election) - Pascoal António Joaquim had 45 votes in favour, zero against and no abstentions.
The re-election, held during the 42nd Ordinary Session of the Executive Council of the African Union, is part of the Angolan government´s strategy of inserting national cadres into different regional and international organizations, especially the African Union.
The election of the members of the African Union Advisory Board on Corruption is based on the African Union Convention decisions on Prevention and Corruption Fight, adopted in July 2003, as well as in the Internal Regulation of the Executive Council.
Members from the Eastern, Central and Western Regions were also elected in accordance with the modalities of application of the Criteria for Equitable Representation and Geographical Rotation within the Organs and Institutions of the African Union.
In total, the session elected six members of the African Union Advisory Board on Corruption (AUABC) and appointed three judges for the African Union Administrative Court and one member of the AU External Auditors Council, for a two-year term.
Pascoal António Joaquim, 66, has 43 years spent in the Public Prosecution Office. He has a Law degree from the public Agostinho Neto University, having participated in 2000, in France, in a training course on jurisdictional matters.
He was deputy attorney-general of the Republic and member of the High Council of the Judicial Magistracy of the Public Prosecution since 2003.
Pascoal António Joaquim is re-elected for the African Union Advisory Board on Corruption (AUABC) at a time when Angolan authorities have placed fight against corruption on top of the priorities.
AUABC tasks, among others, is to promote and encourage the member States to adopt and implement measures against corruption in order to prevent, detect, punish and eradicate it and related offences in Africa.
