Luanda - Angola has expressed its interest in permanent work on promotion of peace and security, particularly in Africa.
The country’s interest was expresssed by its Permanent Representative to the United Nations Francisco José da Cruz, during a courtesy meeting with the Deputy Secretary General of the United Nations Amina Mohammed held on Wednesday.in New York
Francisco da Cruz recalled that the Angolan President João Lourenço has been awarded with the title of Champion for Peace and Reconciliation in Africa by the African Union, underlining that the country aims to include national staff in the UN system and identify opportunities to appoint personnel to deal with peace and security issues.
Amina Mohammed, on her turn, praised Angola's role towards the pacification process between the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda, having highlighted the country's contribution to peace and security in the continent, based on its internal experience in achieving a solution to the conflict that ravaged the country for nearly three decades.
The UN official encouraged the country to continue with its commitment to promoting a culture of peace in the continent, through various initiatives it has carried out.
Among the initiatives carried out by Angola, Amina Mohammed highlighted the Pan-African Forum for the Culture of Peace and Non-Violence to be held in November 22-24, as part of the 3rd edition of the Luanda Biennale.
The UN Deputy Secretary General took the opportunity to confirm presence at this highly important event, at a time when there are situations that continue to jeopardize peace and security in Africa.
The two officials also discussed the expectations surrounding the High Level Week of the 78th Session of the General Assembly to be held on September 18 to 26.
