Brazzaville – Angola has manifested support for the proposal presented by the Head of State of the Republic of Congo, Denis Sassou N’Guesso, about the need for the creation of an institution linked to the United Nations (UN) dedicated to matters relating to forests, said Friday the Angolan Foreign minister, Teté António.
The minister was speaking at the First International Conference on Afforestaion and Reforestation, which took place on July 02-05 in Brazzaville.
Teté António said that Angola also hails the initiative of President Nguesso on the adoption, by the UN General Assembly, of a resolution that would officially support the African and Global Decade on Afforestaion and Reforestation.
He explained that Angola advises all countries represented in the Brazzaville conference to mobilise their respective regional groups at the UN to defend the referred proposal.
Angola equally recommends the adoption of a decision on the issue in the next summit of the African Union, set to happen in Ghana, on July 21.
In his intervention, Teté António – who was representing President João Loureço – encouraged all regional economic communities of Africa to promote the conclusion reached at the Brazzaville meeting.
He underscored that Angola commits itself to working with all member states for the implementation of the decisions of the Heads of State and Government Summit on Afforestaion and Reforestaion, including during its presidency of the African Union in 2025.
“It is more than obvious that today, no country, no continent can, by itself, resolve the challenges connected to the problem of climate changes”, stressed the Angolan diplomat.
The Foreign minister went on to remind that Angola has organised an Extraordinary Summit of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) on the El Niño phenomenon, further stressing that “there is need for a global conversation for us to identify the operational mechanisms that help us to revert the current picture that the world is experiencing”.
This international conference is an African initiative aimed at outlining strategies and policies to promote the recovery of degraged forests, as well as the preservation of bio-diversity and mitigation of climate changes.
