Luanda - The President of the Constitutional Court (TC) Laurinda Cardoso reiterated Tuesday in Rabat (Morocco) the defence of African judicial institutions with competences in constitutional matters, with a view to ensuring the principles and values.

Laurinda Cardoso was speaking at the opening of the 6th Congress of the Conference of Constitutional Jurisdictions of Africa (CJCA), an organisation that Angola has chaired since 2019.

At the meeting, which runs until Thursday (24) in the Moroccan capital, the president of the TC stated that constitutional jurisdictions should serve as a mirror of democratic values

She said that these were democratic values relatively to the assumption of “certain functions in a rotational basis”.

Laurinda Cardoso, who will transfer the rotating presidency of the organisation to Morocco, said it was an honour to direct “such a prestigious conference”, having highlighted the exchange of experiences with other constitutional jurisdictions in Africa.

“It has allowed us to increase our learning on certain matters and good practices, which has certainly reinforced and will continue to reinforce and strengthen our institutional capacity and response to citizens' demands”, she declared at the time.

The 6th Congress of the CJCA is focusing on the relationship between African Constitutional Jurisdictions and International Law, leaving room for the election of the country that in the coming years will direct the destinies of the institution, substituting Angola.

Composed of 48 constitutional institutions, the CJCA, based in Algeria, is an African institution that brings together the African courts responsible for ensuring and fully complying with the Magna Law in the respective countries.

The CJCA works to promote constitutional justice, exchange experiences, promote constitutional jurisprudence, disseminate universal values and principles of the rule of law, democracy and human rights, within the framework of the preamble of the Constitutive Act of the African Union.
