Luanda – Angola recorded 20,581 accidents from January 2022 to June 2023, which resulted to death of 4,433 citizens, according to the Home Affairs minister Eugénio Laborinho.
Eugénio Laborinho who was speaking Monday in Luanda at thanksgiving mass in honour of the road accidents victims, stressed that 1,712 cases were recorded in Luanda province, 614 in Huíla, 549 in Benguela and 528 in Huambo province.
The minister pointed out the speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol, disregarding traffic rules, crossing pedestrians in inappropriate places and lack of precaution as main causes of the road accidents across the country.
The Angolan Government approved, on May 29, 2023, the National Plan of Road Safety and Prevention 2023-2027, which defines the main lines of road safety public policies, whose goal is to reduce by 50% the road accidents.
Eugénio Laborinho asked for the collaboration of the church, as a privileged partner of the State, in order to sensitize the religious community and civil society in general to take the necessary precautions and observe traffic rules, with a view to drop the rates of road accidents .
