Luanda – The secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Esmeralda Mendonça, will participate this Wednesday, in New York, in the session of the United Nations Security Council on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) issue.
According to a press release sent to ANGOP, Esmeralda Mendonça will speak at the meeting that will serve to present the UN Secretary-General's Semiannual Report on the evolution of the situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
The UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy for the Great Lakes Region, Huang Xia, will provide information on the implementation of the 2013 Peace, Security and Cooperation Framework Agreement (PSC-F) for the DRC and the Great Lakes Region.
Since the last Council meeting on the region in September 2023, the security situation in eastern DRC has deteriorated significantly.
Angola has been making efforts at the highest level to defuse tension between the DRC and Rwanda, aiming to promote a political solution to the conflict.
In this context, President João Lourenço held separate meetings, in Luanda, with his counterparts from the DRC and Rwanda, respectively, on the 27th of February and 11th of March of the current year, with the two leaders agreed to meet for direct talks.
On this trip to New York, ambassador Esmeralda Mendonça, who represents the minister of Foreign Affairs, Téte António, is accompanied by the director of Multilateral Affairs, Sara Silva.
