Luanda – The speaker of Angola National Assembly, Carolina Cerqueira is to take part in the extraordinary meeting of the Executive Committee and Presidents of the Parliamentary Forum of the Southern African Development Community (SADC-PF) in Cape Town, South Africa, on January 30,31.
According to the programme to which ANGOP had access, the Angolan delegation is made up of MP Pedro Sebastião, president of the National Group for Regional Parliaments; and Pedro Agostinho de Neri, secretary general of the National Assembly.
The Angolan parliamentarians are scheduled to take part in the South African Legislative Sector Oversight Summit 2024 this month.
The event will be held under the slogan "Striving to achieve oversight that guarantees the realization of a better life for all South Africans", a partnership between the Forum of Speakers of the Legislative Chambers of South Africa (SFSA) and the South African Parliamentary Institute (IPSA).
The summit to be opened by the President of South Africa, Ciryl Ramaphosa, aims to promote reflection on the effectiveness of the implementation of constitutional mandates and to explore transformational approaches and strategies to ensure effective oversight of the sector.
It also aims to share experiences and exchange ideas with regional, continental and international counterparts on effective oversight practices, as well as explore partnerships and opportunities for collaboration with relevant and critical intervention in the oversight ecosystem.
The SADC PF is the regional inter-parliamentary body composed of members of national parliaments of member states, representing more than 3,500 parliamentarians in the Southern African region.
Created by the SADC Summit on September 8, 1997, the Forum is composed of the chairperson of the session and a maximum of five representatives elected by the National Parliament of each Member State.
The aim of the Forum is to provide a platform to support and improve regional integration through parliamentary participation and to promote best practice in the role of parliaments in regional integration and co-operation.
The Parliamentary Forum address a wide range of issues, including, the promotion of human rights, gender equality, good governance, democracy and transparency, the promotion of peace, security and stability, accelerating the pace of economic cooperation, development and integration on the basis of equity and mutual benefit, and facilitating networking with other inter-parliamentary organizations.
The objectives also include promoting the participation of non-governmental organizations, businesses and intellectual communities in SADC activities, familiarizing SADC citizens with the aims and objectives of SADC and informing SADC about public opinion on South Africa's National Development Program and issues affecting the southern region of the African continent.
