Luanda - Angola's permanent representative to the United Nations, Isabel de Jesus Godinho, assured, in Vienna (Austria), that the country has been implementing several programs that aim to mitigate the harmful consequences of drug use.
The Angolan diplomat, who was speaking at the 67th session of the United Nations Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND), which takes place in the Austrian capital, from the 14th to the 22nd of this month, highlighted the measures to prevent and raise awareness in society against the use and illegal trade of drugs and the existence of treatment, recovery and reintegration centers for drug addicts.
Angola's permanent representative to the United Nations and other international organizations in Vienna also highlighted the Executive's actions to restrict and combat organized and cross-border drug crime.
In her intervention, she defended the need to prevent and address the consequences and challenges of drug use, in all their complexity, as a crucial element for fulfilling the global commitments enshrined in the various conventions and in the 2030 Sustainable Development agenda.
She called for coordinated and sustained action, including accelerating the implementation of global, regional and national policies, building on the international drug control system and respect for human rights and the promotion of the well-being and dignity of all human beings.
The meeting, which was attended by around 150 delegations from member states, was organized in two segments, namely a high-level one and a technical one.
The high-level segment, held on the 14th and 15th of March, was the highlight of the event, which was chaired by the Permanent Representative of the Republic of Ghana to the United Nations, Ambassador Philbert Johnson, in his capacity as Chairman of the 67th Commission of CND.
During this follow-up, most delegations considered the use of drugs as an evil that affects humanity and whose consequences have taken on alarming proportions.
In this regard, they agreed on the need for concerted action by the international community in which governments and international organizations and civil society converge in the same direction.
At the technical follow-up meeting, issues related to strategic management, budgetary and administrative issues, reinforcement of international cooperation, among others, will be analyzed. DC/DOJ
