Luanda - The minister of foreign relations, Teté António praised, on Tuesday, in New York, the support that the Non-Governmental Organization The Halo Trust has provided to the demining process in Angola.
Speaking at an event in honor of Angola's leadership in the removal of landmines, representing the President of the Republic, the head of Angolan diplomacy highlighted the investment of US$60 million that allowed other amounts to be channeled from the private sector and other partners, namely the government of the United States of America.
He highlighted that landmines continue to restrict access to agricultural activities, which complicates “our ability to develop large areas of the country and deters ecotourists from visiting them”.
The event, which took place on the sidelines of the 79th Session of the UN General Assembly, happened under the motto: “Celebrating Angola's Success in Promoting Economic, Conversation and Multilateral Opportunities for a Better future”.
It aimed to mobilize global press attention, inspire other countries affected by landmines and motivate donor nations and the private sector to invest in the future of Southeast Angola.
For his part, Prince Harry highlighted President João Lourenço's leadership in the country's demining process, which in recent years has reached thousands of hectares, allowing agriculture and tourism to return to areas previously inaccessible due to landmines.
During the event, the role of Angolan sappers was highlighted, stressing that more than half are women, who have been leaders in post-conflict recovery.
The HALO TRUST is a non-profit organization specializing in cleaning up war debris, such as landmines and unexploded weapons, in post-conflict war zones.
This year marks the 30th anniversary since he has been helping to free Angola from landmines.
