Luanda - Issues of security and stability in the Great Lakes region dominated the meeting that the Angolan Foreign minister, Téte António, had on Monday in Luanda Province with the special representative of the European Union in this area of Africa, Johan Borgstam.
The two officials also analyzed the current state of relations between Angola and the European Union.
During the meeting, minister Téte António reiterated Angola's role as an agent of pacification in the Great Lakes Region, highlighting the external initiatives of the Angolan Government for the stabilization and sustainable development of countries in the region.
In turn, Johan Borgstam reiterated the European Union's support for actions aimed at an important and sustained resolution of the conflicts that afflict the Great Lakes.
He recognized the positive impact of the initiatives promoted by the Angolan President of the Republic, João Lourenço, in favor of the pacification of Africa, with particular emphasis on the situation that prevails in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
The European diplomat recognized the crucial role of the Angolan government in mediating conflicts, as he considers that it has contributed to mitigating tension not only in the DRC and Sudan, but also in other areas of instability on the African continent.
The European Union's special representative for the Great Lakes Region has a crucial role in implementing the EU's foreign policy in an area marked by protracted conflicts, humanitarian crises and political tension.
The Great Lakes region, located in Central Africa, covers countries such as the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Rwanda, Burundi and Uganda, among others, and is an area of great instability due to territorial disputes, armed groups and ethnic issues.
Johan Borgstam works to support peace efforts in the region, facilitating dialogue between countries and parties involved in conflicts, with the aim of preventing the increase in violence and promoting the peaceful resolution of conflicts.
He also has the task to carry out joint works with the United Nations (UN), African Union (AU) and other regional and international bodies to assure that diplomatic and humanitarian efforts can be coordinated in a feasible way by avoiding duplication and promoting synergies.
However, one of the objectives is to guarantee that the European Union promotes and monitors respect for human rights, good governance and the strengthening of democratic institutions in the region, especially in areas affected by conflict.
