Luanda - Angola and Nigeria on Monday in Abuja, Nigeria discussed ways to update the Memorandum to Strengthen Cooperation between the two countries in the defense and security areas.
According to a press release, the defense ministers of the two countries, João Ernesto dos Santos (Angola) and Badaru Abubakar (Nigeria), also discussed participation in African Union and United Nations peace missions.
During a meeting with his Nigerian counterpart on the sidelines of the High Level Conference on Anti-Terrorism, Extreme Violence and Unconstitutional Changes in Africa, the Angolan minister highlighted Nigeria's historic role in Angola's liberation struggle and in the Bicesse Peace deal.
On the occasion, João Ernesto dos Santos advocated sustainable cooperation for an Africa free of terrorist threats.
The Angolan minister also met with the National Security Advisor to the President of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Jean Lowis Esambo.
The two officials discussed new developments in the pacification process in the eastern region of the DRC, such as President João Lourenço's challenging task as the African Union's Champion of Peace and Reconciliation.
The National Security Advisor of President Félix Tchissekedi thanked Angola and President João Lourenço for their continued availability and support for the stabilization of the DRC.
In the conference´s first day, all the speeches were in the same line on the consensus that the phenomenon is holding back Africa's development and destroying families.
Participants concluded that terrorism and unconstitutional changes cannot coexist with democracy and good governance, which is why countries must cooperate, share information and take swift and practical decisions to discourage the phenomenon.
The Minister of National Defense and Veterans of the Homeland, João Ernesto dos Santos on Tuesday addressed a forum reaffirming the country’s commitment to fight for stability in the Southern, Central and Great Lakes regions.
The focus of the minister's speech was the important role played by President João Lourenço in mediating the conflict between the Democratic Republics of Congo and Rwanda.
