Luanda – Angola’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Téte António, and the Belgian ambassador to Angola, Stephane Doppagne on Monday discussed aspects related to increase of bilateral relations and the need to intensify political consultations between the two countries.
According to a note sent to ANGOP, during the meeting the two countries discussed regional issues, with a focus on the ongoing conflict between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
The issue of the withdrawal of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in the DRC (MONUSCO) and the economic challenges of Burundi and Uganda in the region were also discussed during the meeting.
On the occasion, the Belgian diplomat emphasized that he has been following the situation in the east of the DRC very closely, which is why he supports the "Luanda Process" having praised the efforts of the Angolan president João Lourenço.
Political, diplomatic and cooperation relations between Angola and Belgium date back to 1979 and were formalized in 1983 with the signing of the Economic, Technical, Scientific and Cultural Cooperation Agreement.
Both countries share a number of economic interests, especially in the diamond sector, one of the most important areas of economic cooperation.MCN/DAN/AMP
