Luanda - The Speaker of Angola National Assembly (AN) Carolina Cerqueira received Thursday a parliamentary delegation from the Bahamas, a country admitted few days ago as the 180th member of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).
Speaking to the press, the head of the Bahamian parliamentary delegation, Pia Roller, said she had shared ideas about her country's parliament and the Angolan parliament, which already has vast legislative experience.
Pia Roller said that in the elections held in her country in 2021, seven women were elected to legislative organs, which she added is a historic milestone for her country.
The politician said she shared experience in the parliamentary field, with Angolan Speaker, with the aim to strengthen bilateral relation in this field.
Pia Roller said she leads a non-governmental organization in her country to bring women to the top.
Located in the North Atlantic, the Bahamas archipelago is made up of around 700 islands, of which only 30 are inhabited. With a total area of 13,949 square kilometers, its main neighbors are the United States and Cuba and Haiti and Turkey and Caicos both to the south-east.
Angola and Mozambique analyse parliamentary cooperation
The Angolan Speaker also held talks with her Mozambican counterpart, Esperança Bias, on Thursday to discuss issues related to cooperation between the two parliaments.
Esperança Bia said she welcomed her Angolan counterpart for hosting the IPU General Assembly.
"We salute Angola for hosting the IPU General Assembly, which is an event that makes us all proud, we Portuguese-speaking countries, because it is not easy to host an event of this nature," the politician said.
Audience with East Timor
Carolina Cerqueira also received in audience the parliamentary delegation from East Timor that is taking part in the IPU Assembly.
The head of the East Timorese parliamentary delegation, Veneranda Lemos, thanked Angola for its support in the liberation struggle of her country.
"Angola supported the liberation of our homeland from the start and I want to express my thanks to Angola and the Angolan people for their action," Lemos said.
The Timorese politician said she discussed with Angolan Speaker about her country's proposal to make Portuguese a working language in the IPU.
East Timor is a country in Southeast Asia that occupies half of the island of Timor.
