Addis Ababa – Angola and South Africa ambassadors to Ethiopia, Miguel César Domingos Bembe and Edward Xolisa Makaya respectively, on Tuesday aligned the two countries’ positions towards the main purposes of the African Union (AU).
This includes the promotion of unity, solidarity and cohesion and cooperation between the countries and peoples of Africa.
The two diplomats discussed about the ongoing AU reform process and the need to accelerate Agenda 2063 dubbed “The Africa we want”, a plan for the socio-economic development and transformation of the African continent in a period 50 years (2013-2063), which comprises 7 aspirations, 20 objectives, 28 priority areas, 57 targets and 72 indicators.
As regards the conclusion of the First Ten-Year Implementation Plan (FTYIP) of Agenda 2063 this year, both ambassadors proposed actions for the Second Ten-Year Implementation Plan dubbed “the Special Project”.
Within the framework of the continent's economic integration, the diplomats defended the need to accelerate the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (ACFTA).
The diplomats expressed satisfaction with recent integration of the AU as a full member of the G20, assuming itself as a great force to guarantee international equity and justice and outlined ideas regarding Angola's mandate on the AU Peace and Security Council for the 2024-2026 term and the presidency of the continental organization in 2025.
The two AU permanent AU representatives also analyzed the functioning of the African Union Commission (AUC) and addressed the principles that should guide candidacies for the election of the next President.
Miguel Bembe and Edward Makaya emphasized the need for AUC to have strong leadership, capable of guaranteeing the unity of the continental organization and responding to its major projects and challenges, based on the principles that governed its foundation.
In recent days, Ambassador Miguel Bembe met with his counterparts from Algeria, Lamina Laabas, Mozambique, Ana Nemba Uaiene, and Egypt, Mohamed Omar Gad, who praised the role Angola has played in peace issues and security on the African continent .VM/CF/AMP
