Luanda - Angola supports the 'Pact for the Future', adopted by consensus by the United Nations General Assembly, taking into account its objectives of 'leaving no one behind,' the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Téte António, said on Sunday in New York.

Speaking to the press, he said that the pact concerns the future that everyone wants, although it encompasses many concerns that are not only of the African continent, but also of Angola.

He underlined that the Summit on the Future is an opportunity for a comprehensive approach to the issues that matter to humanity, starting from the development of technologies, peace and security, issues that concern youth and the Digital Compact.

'Therefore, Angola embraces this project and supports the consensus, not only in the adoption of the pact itself, but also supported the positions that made this instrument not go backwards, taking into account some concerns raised by some member states, but which the African group saw fit to move forward,' he said.

Téte António also highlighted the fact that the pact was approved during the African presidency of the UN General Assembly and because it also had Namibia as one of the co-facilitating countries, a neighbouring country and friend of Angola.

The Pact for the Future aims to 'boost the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), inclusive and just societies and the common good of humanity'.

With 84 paragraphs, the pact is action-oriented, with chapters on sustainable development and financing for international development, peace and security.

It is also aimed at science, technology and innovation and digital cooperation, youth and future generations and transformation of global governance.

The agreement was adopted with two annexes, namely the Global Digital Compact and the Declaration on Future Generations, during the Future Summit, opened on Sunday by the president of the 79th session of the General Assembly, the Cameroonian, Philemon Yang, and ongoing until today, the day on which the President of the Republic, João Lourenço, speaks at the event.

In it, world leaders commit to ending hunger and eliminating food insecurity and all forms of malnutrition, as well as ensuring that the multilateral trading system continues to be an engine for sustainable development.

The document should be approved, this Monday, by the heads of State, within the framework of the high-level week of the 79th Session of the UN General Assembly, which takes place from Tuesday until the 30th, under the theme “Let us work inclusively to promote peace, sustainable development and human dignity for present and future generations.”

Angola's participation

On the other hand, the Minister of Foreign Affairs stated that Angola will present, among other matters, contributions to the establishment of security and peace in the world at the 79th session of the UN General Assembly.

He said he will also defend the need to boost the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

He said that in the peace and security chapter, the country continues to defend that the Security Council must be adapted to the current international reality, and must include the African continent.

However, the African position, he said, is that it should have two permanent seats in this body and five non-permanent ones.

He acknowledged that there had been significant steps lately, with the approval of a resolution for United Nations funding of 75 percent of African Union peacekeeping operations.

The High-Level Debate of the 79th Session of the General Assembly of the United Nations, of which the President of the Republic, João Lourenço, will take part, will, among other topics, address the issue of global governance, the issue of youth and future generations, science and technology, as well as analyzing technological transformations at the service of the common good and humanity.

The event, which takes place from Tuesday, will also focus on promoting multilateral solutions, based on the UN Charter and accelerating efforts to implement the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals.

Priorities include supporting international peace and security, promoting sustainable development, combating climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution.

The High-Level Debate of the UN General Assembly will feature the participation of heads of State and Government from the organization's 193 member countries to address the critical challenges and gaps in global governance exposed by recent international shocks.

Angolan diplomacy will be at its peak on the days when the presidential delegation will present its points of view in forums on the economy, environment, banking, digital inclusion, investments, energy. FMA/ART/DOJ
