Luanda – Angola has 175 new prosecutors from Friday onwards, who will strengthen the justice system in the country.
This is the largest insertion of prosecutors in the country's history, which brings the number to 789 professionals and makes Angola the State with the most Public Prosecutor's Office magistrates at the level of Portuguese-speaking African Countries.
According to the Attorney General of the Republic, Hélder Pitta Gróz, the ideal would be for the country to have a ratio of one prosecutor for every 10,000 citizens, as recommended by the United Nations, but Angola has more than thirty million inhabitants.
He said it was necessary to combine the number of magistrates with the existence of facilities, technical means, such as computers and transport, so that a service could be provided to citizens with greater quality and speed.
“We still have numerous weaknesses in these aspects, due to the lack of reasonable conditions,” he said.
He added that it is known to all magistrates that the exercise of the judiciary is not limited to the Courts, where it is represented in all jurisdictions and with legally enshrined functions.
Hélder Pitta Gróz said that “Angolan citizens have the PGR as a safe haven where they can resort, in the event of any illegality or illicit act of which they are a victim”.
He stated that there are citizens who feel unsafe when they go to a police station and do not find a prosecutor.
On the other hand, he highlighted that the PGR has gained, at an international level, respect and consideration for the work carried out in the fight against economic and financial crime, money laundering, asset recovery, among others, recognized by the numerous invitations it receives to participate in international activities.
In this perspective, he recalled that the institution recently received the award for the institution that recovered the most assets in West Africa.
He also mentioned the election of the PGR as co-coordinator, together with Brazil, of the group to combat corruption and recover CPLP assets.
PGR is the privileged partner of UNODC (Office or Office of the Nations against Drugs and Crime) to carry out various activities, especially training. FMA/ART/DOJ
